Data ownership & privacy

You own your data. This page summarizes how we treat it.

The First Nations Principles of OCAP®

The First Nations Information Governance Centre developed the OCAP® principles to address four key concerns: Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession.

When OCAP® was formally established in 1998, it gave shared language to concerns many communities had raised for years: who owns Indigenous data, who controls its use, and who can charge for access to it. In the mid 1990s, co-founder Trevor Wiens was working with communities on consultation and land-use records with communities retaining ownership of their information. That approach shaped LOUIS from the start. Today, OCAP® remains foundational to how we work: clients own their data, control how it’s used, decide who can access it, and are guaranteed copies of all data stored in our secure environment — even in the event of a financial dispute.
